Aadhar’s Validity: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court will pronounce its judgment tomorrow in the case relating to the validity of Aadhaar.

The judgment will be pronounced by a Bench of Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra and Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan.

The brainchild of the UPA government, the Aadhaar Bill was passed by the BJP government.  The controversy is becoming subject matter of litigation before the Supreme Court.

All the steps towards making Aadhaar the only gateway for complete financial and social inclusion, were challenged before the  Supreme Court.  Aadhaar was made mandatory for dispensing welfare schemes’ benefit to an attempt to bring transparency in the taxation of individuals.

The first petition was filed as far back as in 2012.  The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment by a nine-Judge Bench concluded in May 2018.

Kesavananda Bharati case, Aadhaar hearing was one of the longest hearings in the Supreme Court.
